Midwife program files, 1924-1975.

This series contains the midwife program files of the State Board of Health from 1924 to 1969. The Board initiated a midwife licensing program in 1931 to reduce infant mortality and to promote maternal and child health. The records include midwife summaries and licensing records which include both the State Board of Health (1941-1969) and its successor agency, the Division of Health (1970-1975) records.

The Division of Health was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws) as part of the Dept. of Health and Rehabilitative Services. It assumed the duties of the State Board of Health. Article XV of the 1885 Constitution provided for the creation of the State Board of Health, but the Board was not created until the 1889 special session of the Legislature (1889, Ch. 3839, Laws).
